He Said You Can't 3D Print a Band Saw... I Said Hold My Beer
I have no doubt that a band saw can be made with 3d printed parts - all it would take is the right amount of testing and trial and error to determine how strong the parts need to be.
Of course it couldn't entirely made from 3d printed parts, but then a wooden band saw isn't 100% wood either. You would add metal where you need more concentrated strength, like screws, shafts, bolts and bearings. But I firmly believe everything else could be printed while you kick back munching Cheetos and watching UA-cam, while not potentially cutting your fingers off on the table saw you don't know how to use safely.
And like I said in the video, you don't have to throw away a full day plus expensive paint to finish the parts. So I think that printing the parts (or even paying to have them printed from a stronger plastic) would be fairly economical.
For example, the table I printed used less than a full spool of filament, or roughly $25. The plywood I used to make the original costs MORE than that today! If you can get it, that is. And then you need to machine it and finish it and hope you don't make any mistakes.
So yeah, this may seem like a novelty project, but it is definitely not that.
Remember, guys were saying you CAN'T build a wooden band saw not that long ago. Never say never - you are betting against human ingenuity.

What Happens When You Give A Carpenter A 3D Printer?
Переглядів 155 тис.Місяць тому
Short answer: good things happen! This is literally a game changer for someone who can use it as a tool for designing and testing projects. The printer I settled on was from #bambulab the P1P model and I've been using it every day for the last month, sometimes 5 times per day! To use it to it's full potential I've also been learning FreeCad. Powerful FREE software, but a steep learning curve. I...
Too Many Tips to List in this Build - Small Parts Organizer
Переглядів 94 тис.2 місяці тому
Maybe not genius, exactly, but there are some neat ideas in this build. It started out as a simple, easy to make parts organizer, then blossomed into one that's quite a bit more complex. The big one is making the drawers full extension and the compact mechanism that I came up with to do that. The same could be done for larger drawers and I'll have to try that in a future project. Making the dra...
A Modern Twist On An Old Carpenters Trick - Cut Joints Perfectly in One Pass
Переглядів 411 тис.4 місяці тому
Back in the handsaw days, if a carpenter or woodworker needed a joint to fit together perfectly, he would recut the joint with the two parts put together. That made it so that the cut would be mirrored on both pieces, so they would line up accurately after the cut was made. This simple sled does that on the table saw, holding two parts firmly in place for the cut. I also made 45 degree fences t...

Sometimes I rush into a project and the results are less than optimal. The first clue is that I make more mistakes than I usually do and that's due to a lack of detail planning. The second is I don't build-in the features I originally thought of because my overall confidence in the project was low while building it (and making so many mistakes). Most of the stuff you'll see on UA-cam is made to...
Throw Away Your Miter Saw and Make this Instead
Переглядів 83 тис.5 місяців тому
Of course I'm not getting rid of my miter saw, but this is a good alternative to use on the table saw. And yes, you can buy one of these ready made (and you saw may have come with one), but this is more about the methods I used to build it than the final product. Accuracy - you can dial it in to perfection at several angles (0, 22.5, 45 both ways) and then drill a locking pin hole through the p...
Essential Upgrade Cheap, Fast and Easy

Throw away the metal tables that came with your planer and do this instead. Seriously, it's way better - a true upgrade. Before I made the original, I had a serious problem during the winter with slipping on the feed rollers. Turned out the smooth, polished metal bed of the planer had too much friction and the feed rollers couldn't grip the stock well enough to push it through. Changing to the ...
Making a Floating Banquette - Full Build Video

My house is small and doesn't have a formal dining area. However, there is space in the fairly large kitchen to put a small table and chairs making it an eat-in kitchen. I decided to build an L shaped bench in the corner rather than chairs, giving it a more custom look. And to make it challenging (and get the look I want), it doesn't have legs or storage underneath to support it. The banquette ...
They Dropped the Ball, So I Picked it Up - Making the Ultimate Portable Workbench

I designed this project a few years ago and it's based on the Workmate idea where you have a built-in vise on the top for clamping. It also has a two-step step ladder and folds for more compact storage. Last but not least, it folds shorter - the lower parts of the legs fold under, making the bench closer to the ground. I consider this to be a working prototype and I may make a final version (wi...

While I say this is a full build, I haven't made the drawers that will go in this island yet. That will be a project video on its own in the near future. Amazing Sound and Cool Unique Design - How I Made These Slim Open Baffle Speakers

I made these to work with the main speakers in my dedicated listening room. They act similar to side surround speakers and don't put out much bass. But with a separate subwoofer, these sound very good indeed. They are open baffle, in that they don't have a box. Making a speaker that way has some advantages, in that it put out sound from the rear as well that can sound more "full" and "open" and...

love the project but a few recommendations for printing in the future. 1. printing threads is almost always a bad plan unless they are big for other parts. the better solution is print a hole for a threaded insert or cutting like you did. when you do this, you want more walls around that hole to allow for better grip and you also heat the screw beforehand to mold the thread rather than cutting it. 2. you can improve layer adhesion by after printing putting it in your oven for a bit to make the layers better adhere to each other. love the project and would love to see you switch the full machine over to printed parts just to see how far it can go and good job on the dowels it looks like you printed them the long way and not up right (most get that wrong the first time) i also recommend using the printer for jigs and such to speed up work as plastic tends to be cheaper then wood and i find it faster to model some weird jigs then to make them out of wood.

Each tool for the right job. If what you build requires precision and accuracy - print it. If it needs strength and size - use wood! For example, I own a Infinity, but I printed a z gantry modification to use a Kress spindle with a 43mm diameter holding area. This cannot be done with wood.

A few questions: How strong is this blade? For example.. is there much risk at all of it breaking? Is the blade only kept in place by tension? No guides or something? How much to build a large one that cuts 5.5ft trees? Rough estimate. And whats the biggest blade possible? Maybe they can be welded together (strong enough) to make any size? I love this channel so much! Watching people build stuff is so inspiring. How cool would it be to have a mill and be able to go from having someone PAY YOU to pull a tree out into being able to build with that material and make perfect furniture? LIFEGOALS

I was not going to say it because it might be taken as negative, however you asked for feedback and I would like to give you my perspective. When you built your latest tablesaw and the screw mechanism failed, I remember you mentioning the reason that you decided to not do it with an acme thread. You explanation was that most people would not have access to it. I kind of celebrated that reasoning since I was one of them. This 3D printing is nice for your exploration but frankly, most woodworker want-to-be or even those that come to be entertained do not care or have a 3D printer. Nevertheless, you must do what you must do to keep the channel worthwhile to you. Maybe you can tap into those new people that are craving 3D printing content, but it will not be those caring about woodworking. This is only my opinion as one that care about woodworking.

Current 3D printers today remind me of when I started working in Graphic Design and desktop publishing with ink/toner printers. Before we had large format printers we had to print all our poster size jobs on 11x17 paper. Then we had to cut and trim the edges and each piece had "overlap" region. That way we could line them all up on a big foamcore board like wallpaper. Would have to glue on 5+ pieces to make a whole poster. Kinda like what you did for the table. I guess until we get affordable "Large Format 3d printers" we will need to do the same. Just like ink large format printers they will still be a decent junk of change of change. But today a decent large format ink printer can be had for $1-2K. Just 5-10 years ago those same printers were $5-6k.

John, very happy to see that you have embraced the world of 3D printing. I been printing for about 3 years and have no plans to stop any time soon. From shop tools, including my version of your mini compass to RC Crawler parts. It's just a HOOT!! I currently have 2 Creality Ender 3 Pro printers but I'm considering selling both and I have my sights set on a Bambu Labs printer but still trying to deside on which model . The P1P is definitely on my short list. Bandsaw parts, table saw inserts, clamps! WOW Is there a place on your website to purchase the CAD and/or the STL files of your projects. You are quit the engineer and designer. Thanks for all the video and plans you have created. Red

CA glue? in my experience CA is borderline useless in PETG, at least on PETG to PETG. I usually use 3D Gloop as my part joining material of choice, can't call Gloop an adhesive, because it chemically welds the parts together, doesn;t just glue them together. Also, my design skills are non existent, but I have been curious about using slide in inserts, like for your table, printed in the opposite orientation, effectively making 3D printed plywood, so that the differing 'grains' reinforce each other. the way that your insert failed prompted me to suggest that here i'd love to be able to 3D print a band saw, I hope that you complete an entire 3D build of it

You come up with such good ideas and hacks, I'll watch whatever the medium. My most recent design/build using 3D printing that would have been much more difficult in wood is a block that I can use to set my L-Fence when cutting miters on the table saw. It has a 45º foot that fits into the curf cut halfway down a test piece, and a flat 1" surface that is coplaner to the front of the curf. I just bump the L-Fence up against it and tighten it down. Perfect miters. Keep inventing stuff!

The problem with most 3d printing enthusiasts is that they don't know how to build the things they print with their own hands, that's why 3d printing was always seen not so seriously by makers, it became popular only for printing art like miniatures of mini figures or to make prototypes, i also always thought at 3d printing as something that handcraft unskilled people would use to make things, but you showed is much more than that! I think that knowing how to build those things you printed with your own hands makes you understand better how they need to be printed to be useful, also using wood where is unnecessary to print is very important, cause i saw too many projects where the objective is to print every part, like a challenge, while using wood for the support parts saves time and makes a stronger structure. Now i want a 3d printer😅
